The Chicago Cubs have reloaded the 40‑man roster as the 2026 MLB season approaches, and the team is well positioned to make another push back to the postseason.
While the pitching staff saw major improvements, the lineup also took a significant step forward with the addition of third basemanAlex Bregman, who signed a five‑year, $175 million contract with a no‑trade clause earlier this winter.
Bregman arrives with one of the most impressive track records in baseball after his time with the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.
The 31‑year‑old has earned three All‑Star selections, a Silver Slugger Award, a Gold Glove and two World Series championships, giving the Cubs a proven veteran presence to guide a young roster looking to take the next step.
Earlier this week, pitchers and catchers were required to report to spring training, but Bregman was already in camp early, choosing to get a head start with his new team and build familiarity with the coaching staff and clubhouse.
He participated as usual on Thursday, but after the practice he was noticeably absent. Cubs reporter Bruce Levine of Marquee Sports Network later reported that Bregman had left early with flu‑like symptoms. “Cubs Alex Bregman was in camp but went home in the morning with some flu like symptoms,” Levine wrote on X.

While Bregman heading home is a minor setback in his early momentum, it should not interrupt his preparation for long as the 2026 season approaches. He is still expected to carry a major workload for the Cubs both at the plate and defensively.
Last year in Boston, Bregman posted a .273 batting average, .360 on‑base percentage, .821 OPS, 18 home runs and 62 RBIs across 114 games.
If he returns to full strength quickly, Bregman should have no trouble settling in as the centerpiece Chicago expects him to be in its pursuit of a postseason return.
