Cubs Reportedly Showing Interest in Red Sox Right-Handed Starter

The Chicago Cubs will show interest in starting pitching over the next few weeks, with the expectation that they're already doing so.

Reports have suggested that the Cubs have called nearly every team in the league looking for help on the mound, and according to a recent report from George Ofman, they're doing that with a veteran Boston Red Sox right-hander. According to Ofman, the Cubs have called about right-handed Lucas Giolito, who owns a 3.36 ERA with the Red Sox.

“Told the Cubs have their eyes on Lucas Giolito, but thus far it there is no indication the Red Sox are ready to make any more significant trades. He’s 5-1 with a 3.66 ERA,” he wrote.

As he touched on, it remains uncertain what the Red Sox plan to do.

They decided to trade Rafael Devers, which didn't make much sense. However, Boston, which is 9-1 over its last 10, could make the postseason.

If the Red Sox believe they'll make the postseason, keeping a veteran with the type of stuff and track record like Giolito would make sense, as it isn’t easy giving up on guys who have been in this league for as long as he has when teams are trying to make the playoffs.

For that reason alone, and what he's done this season, the Cubs are smart to have interest.

Fortunately, even if the Red Sox don't make him available, the Cubs will have many other options. They might need more than one arm, so that's something they need to keep in mind.
