Cubs Reveal Miguel Amaya Injury Diagnosis After Leaving Blue Jays Game

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya returned to the lineup on Wednesday after being absent since May 25 due to a left oblique strain. The 26-year-old was the team's primary catcher before suffering an injury, and he has a .280 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBI up to this point.

With Amaya on the shelf, the Cubs were using Carson Kelly and Reese McGuire, but Amaya slotted right back into the starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays. His return was expected to be a positive development for a team currently on top of the National League Wild Card standings entering Wednesday.

However, Amaya left the game early after landing awkwardly while stepping on first base and had to be carted off the field in a tough scene in Toronto.

Cubs Provide Amaya Update After Tough Turn of Events

It was an emotional scene in Toronto, and Amaya left on a cart with a towel over his face.

After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell revealed the diagnosis in an interview with Marquee's Taylor McGregor.

"Left ankle sprain, x-rays were taken, negative on the x-rays, which is great," Counsell said. "A little concerned, obviously, at the time of the injury. It's swollen up pretty good already. It's an IL. It's a bad break, bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him."

Amaya had previously been on the 60-day IL and had just returned, and now he is headed back to the IL. In a bit of a silver lining, the initial injury looked much worse.

It's a devastating blow for Amaya, who worked hard to get back to the Cubs lineup only to land right back on the IL.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs are calling up outfielder Owen Caissie, who is their No. 2 prospect, as they approach the final six weeks of the season.

The Cubs finish the series against the Blue Jays on Thursday before returning home for an eight-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers.
