Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki walks off Padres with clutch RBI
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs opened their three-game series vs. the San Diego Padres with another late-game answer Monday night, taking down San Diego 3-2 at Wrigley Field thanks to a Seiya Suzuki walk-off single.

Suzuki delivered the decisive swing with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Working on a 1-0 count against Padres reliever Mason Miller, he lifted a ball toward left field that dropped near the ivy and brought home the winning run.

Jase Bowen tracked the ball toward the wall and made a leaping attempt, but he could not secure it. The play sent the Cubs spilling out of the dugout as Suzuki completed another tense win for a club that has repeatedly found ways to finish close games this season.

MLB shared the highlight on X, formerly Twitter, after Suzuki ended the opener and sent the Wrigley Field crowd into celebration.

Seiya Suzuki WALKS IT OFF FOR THE @CUBS !”

The walk-off gave the club its major league-leading 10th walk-off victory of the 2026 season, showing how dangerous the Cubs can be in tight situations. Their lineup did not dominate the Padres, but it created enough pressure to force one final mistake.

For San Diego, the loss spoiled a notable night. The Padres had Jake Cronenworth back in the lineup after reinstating him from the injured list, giving manager Craig Stammen another experienced option in the infield.

Instead, Suzuki changed the ending with one timely swing. The defeat extended the Padres’ current losing streak to three games and gave Chicago immediate momentum in the series opener.

The Cubs did not need a blowout to make their point at Wrigley. They needed one late chance, and Suzuki delivered it.
