Cubs Sign Adrian Houser to Minor-League Deal

In a quest to bolster their starting pitching depth, the Chicago Cubs are calling on manager Craig Counsell's old friend, Adrian Houser. The right-hander spent most of his career with the Milwaukee Brewers before a trade to the New York Mets in December. Houser now joins the Cubs organization on a minor-league deal.

While the veteran touts a 5.84 ERA this season, the Cubs are buying low on a potential rotation boost. Houser's familiarity with Counsell likely played a big role in why the Cubs took a flier on the right-hander.

A trial run in Triple-A Iowa may go a long way toward determining if Houser will join the big-league club in 2024. His first first appearance didn't go as planned, but there's still time for him to settle in.

Once again, the Cubs are pursuing low-cost, high-reward organizational depth pieces. If Houser can't find his footing with the Iowa Cubs, it won't hurt Chicago to part ways.

The Cubs' rotation has been ravaged by injuries to Jordan Wicks and Ben Brown, so acquiring a backup arm with starting experience is wise. Subpar performances from Kyle Hendricks could also force the issue.

Houser spent time with the Brewers from 2015 to 2023 pitching in the rotation and the bullpen. Given his experience with Counsell, he could have a leg up on any potential pitching call-ups this season.

The Cubs have been active in making under-the-radar minor-league signings this season. If they can get something out of Houser, it could be a big boost.

Jed Hoyer's main goal is to provide the team with the tools to succeed in 2024 and beyond. While minor-league deals aren't typically sexy signings, they can bolster a roster when injuries and underperformance inevitably occur.
