Cubs Sign INF Nicky Lopez to Minor-League Deal

The Chicago Cubs seem to be working the phones for external additions to the organization. This time, the team is bringing INF  Nicky Lopez  into the fold. The 29-year-old heads north after spending the 2024 season with the Chicago White Sox.

As Nico Hoerner recovers from offseason surgery, there might be a chance that Lopez could get an extra look in camp. He'll provide a nice compliment from the left side to veteran Jon Berti on the bench.

It's another instance of Jed Hoyer trying to find a diamond in the rough. If Lopez doesn't make an impact in camp, there's no harm in letting him go.

He's a solid defender, splitting his time between second base and shortstop. The offense on the other hand is subpar at best. Hitting a meager .241 is nothing special, so it's clear that the Cubs are acquiring him for his talent with the glove.

Prior to the 2024 season, Lopez spent the majority of his career with the Kansas City Royals before a brief stint with the Atlanta Braves.

As the rumor mill continues to churn with Cubs' nuggets, the team is passing the time by looking for quality in their ever growing quantity of Spring Training invites. Not all of them will stick, but it stands to reason that some of them might.

If Nicky Lopez makes that list, the Cubs are getting big-time experience from a player who is still only 29.
