Cubs Sign Left-Handed Pitcher Recently Waived by Mets

The Chicago Cubs have signed left-handed reliever Génesis Cabrera, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Cabrera was most recently on the New York Mets, but declared for free agency after being waived. There are no reports yet on whether Cabrera will pitch for the Cubs or Triple-A Iowa.

It is always a bit concerning when adding a recently waived player, particularly given Cabrera’s solid start to 2025 (3.52 ERA, 4.11 FIP over six outings and seven and 2/3 innings). Regardless of why the Mets dumped Cabrera, he could form a fun, southpaw trio with Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar.

Pomeranz has been brilliant over his 12 and 2/3 innings for the Cubs, having not allowed a run and recording 14 strikeouts to three walks. Thielbar has also impressed, with a 2.37 ERA, a 2.60 FIP, and 18 strikeouts to nine walks over 19 innings.

The only potential concern with those two is age, as Pomeranz (36) and Thielbar (38) are no spring chickens and could benefit from a younger lefty to ease their workloads.

The 28-year-old Cabrera is no stranger to the National League Central, either, as he began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and was a solid arm for them from 2019-2023 (4.14 ERA, 4.43 FIP), when he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cabrera also has an interesting arsenal for a relief pitcher, headlined by a sinker (30%), curveball (27%), four-seamer (19%), and cutter (19%), while also mixing in a splitter (5%).

Expect an imminent announcement on Cabrera’s status within the organization.
