Amid their offensive woes and struggles, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly getting their young infielder back.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported Monday that the Cubs plan to activate infielder Matt Shaw (back) off the injured list on Tuesday after he spent a few days on a rehab assignment.

Shaw was placed on the 10-day injured list back in May with mild back tightness, but recently commenced a rehab assignment for Triple-A Iowa.

In his second full season in the major leagues, Shaw is slashing .242/.291/.400 with three home runs, 12 RBI and an OPS of .691 in 42 games. Prior to going on the shelf, Shaw was in the midst of a brutal stretch at the plate.

The 24-year-old went just 1-for-22 at the dish in May, leading to questions on whether or not Shaw has a future in Chicago, especially after they signed All-Star third basemanAlex Bregman in the offseason.

Nonetheless, Shaw is slated to return tomorrow, when the Cubs are really struggling. After losing two out of three to the San Francisco Giants over the weekend, Chicago has now lost six out of their last 10 and is just two games over .500 at 34-32. The Cubs have also scored three runs or fewer in five out of their last eight games. They enter Tuesday in fourth place in the National League Central.

All in all, it has been a tale of two seasons for the Cubs, who had multiple winning streaks of 10 or more this year, as well as suffering a 10-game slide.

Shaw will now look to help a Cubs team that has really been reeling as of late. Chicago begins a six-game road trip this week with the first of three against the Colorado Rockies starting on Tuesday.

The Cubs are currently a half-game out of the third and final NL Wild Card spot.
