With MLB's offseason underway, the Chicago Cubs are already hard at work to make changes for the 2025 season. Per The Athletic, the Cubs will hire Quintin Berry as their third base coach. The 39-year-old takes over for the recently departed Willie Harris.

It's encouraging to see Craig Counsell exercise free reign in comprising his coaching staff. This hire, which appears to be the first of many, has the skipper's fingerprints all over it.

Berry joins the Cubs after spending four seasons as the Milwaukee Brewers' first base coach. Three of those seasons featured Counsell at the helm in the Brewers dugout. The Cubs adding Berry is a step in the right direction for a team in desperate need of new voices.

Berry is no stranger to the North Side. During his playing days, the veteran outfielder appeared in eight games for the Cubs in 2015. Known primarily for his speed, Berry should have no problem teaching those fundamentals to a group of young players in Chicago.

Harris was one of many holdovers from David Ross's Cubs coaching staff, and it seemed odd for Counsell to be saddled with him. The highest-paid manager deserved to bring in whoever he wanted on his first day in Chicago.

After adding Berry, the Cubs still have work to do to round out their coaching staff. If the team lets Counsell bring in his guys, the dugout will seemingly have better cohesion than in 2024.

Free agency is still a mystery, but it's encouraging to see the Cubs aren't asleep at the wheel to start the offseason. Berry could be the first of many steps in the right direction for the organization.
