Cutter Coffey ranks as Blue Jays Nation’s 31st-best prospect in 2025 mid-season update
© Nathan Ray Seebeck - USA Today

Cutter Coffey is one of a handful of prospects on this list who were acquired before the 2024 trade deadline.

This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual mid-season prospect list, where we’ll take a look at the 50 best prospects in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. I’ll look at the player’s stats, what other publications have to say, as well as my own observations of the players.

Coffey has put together a solid season with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, thus ranking as our 31st-best prospect in the mid-season update. If you missed the last article, Canadian Sam Shaw ranked as the 32nd-best prospect in the system.

Getting to know Cutter Coffey…

Position: Infield

Bats: Right

Born: May 21st, 2004

Acquired: Trade with Boston Red Sox

Previous ranking: 30th (2025 pre-season)

Standing at 6’1”, 190 lbs, Coffey was a two-way prospect heading into the 2022 draft, with the Boston Red Sox selecting him 41st overall. He dropped pitching to focus on hitting once turning professional, and slashed .125/.300/.156 with no home runs to end the 2022 season.

In 2023, Coffey started the year in Single-A, where he slashed .226/.341/.348 with six home runs in 349 plate appearances. The infielder didn’t find the same success in High-A that season, batting just .136 with two doubles in 79 plate appearances.

Repeating the High-A level to begin the 2024 season, Coffey slashed .238/.321/.463 with 14 home runs in 271 plate appearances, giving him a 120 wRC+ with the Red Sox’s High-A team. Before the trade deadline, the Red Sox shipped him, Eddinson Paulino, and Gilberto Batista to the Blue Jays for Danny Jansen.

Finishing the season with the High-A Canadians, Coffey slashed .185/.309/.272 with a home run in 97 plate appearances for a 76 wRC+. However, he’s been great in 2025 with the Canadians, slashing .281/.367/.430 with nine home runs in 401 plate appearances, with an 11.2 BB% and 23.2 K% for a 121 wRC+.

The biggest concern regarding Coffey is his hit tool, as MLB Pipeline gives him a 40-grade while ranking him as the 28th-best Blue Jays’ prospect. Coffey’s improved batting average is promising, but he also has quick bat speed that gives him extra-base power. His strongest tool is his arm, meaning that he’ll likely end up staying at third base as he progresses up the minor league ladder. On top of that, Coffey has played some second base this season as well. Coffey’s run and field tools are ranked as average.

The 21-year-old is currently on the 7-day Injured List and hasn’t played since August 7th.
