D-Backs swept by Marlins after another late game collapse

The Arizona D-Backs were defeated on Sunday by the Marlins by a score of 6-4 at Chase Field. The bullpen came unglued and pitching problems persisted, as the Snakes were swept by Miami.

Miami jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after an error by Eugenio Suárez when his throw to first base was off target. The D-Backs punched right back in the second and third innings though, when Jake McCarthy got it started. McCarthy hit a deep fly ball off of the center field wall that scored Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to tie it up in the bottom of the second inning.

Ketel Marte wanted in on the action as he hit a solo shot home run to give Arizona a 2-1 lead. Marte has been on fire as of late in his campaign to be the starting second baseman for the National League in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.

Eduardo Rodriguez was locked in on Sunday, as he pitched 5.1 innings while only allowing four hits and one earned run on Sunday. It was E-Rod’s second strong outing in a row, and a welcome sight for the D-Backs after what has been a lackluster start to the 2025 season for Rodriguez.

D-Backs bullpen falters again:

Arizona’s bullpen was sturdy on Sunday until the top of the eighth inning. Ryan Thompson and Kyle Backhus didn’t allow a hit, although Jalen Beeks entered and walked three hitters and gave up a single to Otto Lopez that scored two and gave Miami a 3-2 lead. Beeks then allowed a bases clearing double to Otto Lopez to give Miami a 6-2 lead. The Marlins were able to put up five runs while having two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

Arizona made a late comeback effort and were able to get a couple runs in after a past ball and a Eugenio Suárez single brought in two runs for the D-Backs to bring it to a 6-4 game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Arizona couldn’t complete the comeback and eventually dropped Sunday’s matchup by a score of 6-4 and will look to get back on track in a four-game home series against the San Francisco Giants.
