Shohei Ohtani suffered what looked like a painful shoulder injury during Game 2 of the World Series between his Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees on Saturday night, but there might be some reason for optimism.

Ohtani tried to steal second base in the bottom the 7th inning of the Dodgers’ 4-2 win over the Yankees. He was thrown out by Austin Wells and appeared to jam his left arm as he went into his slide. You can see the play here.

Following the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani suffered a left shoulder subluxation, which is a partial dislocation. Roberts said the team was “encouraged” by initial tests, however.

“His strength was great, his range of motion was good, we’re encouraged,” Roberts told reporters. “Obviously I can’t speculate until we get some scans but we’re encouraged.”

Ohtani finished 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in Game 2. He went 1-for-5 in Game 1 of the series.

The good news for the Dodgers is that they have a 2-0 World Series lead over the Yankees. New York will host Game 3 on Monday night. Even if Ohtani is able to play, there will be questions about how effective he can be after hurting his shoulder.
