Dave Roberts revealed the reason the Los Angeles Dodgers optioned Hyeseong Kim to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday. The Dodgers announced the move before the start of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies and added veteran utility player Santiago Espinal to the roster. The move came shortly after Kiké Hernández's latest injury created another opening on the active roster.

Roberts explained that Kim's swing had changed over the past several weeks. According to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic MLB, Roberts said the Dodgers noticed more swing-and-miss in Kim's at-bats and believed he would benefit from regular playing time away from the Major League spotlight.

The manager pointed to Kim's lower half, saying the 26-year-old appeared to have lost some of the movement and rhythm that helped him succeed earlier in the season. He also felt Kim looked less confident at the plate compared to previous months.

The Dodgers believe everyday at-bats in Triple-A will help Kim regain his timing and return to the form that earned him a spot on the Major League roster. Kim originally joined the Dodgers after a successful career in South Korea and quickly became a versatile piece for the club.

He got his opportunity earlier this season when Mookie Betts missed time, and his strong play helped him remain on the roster even after Betts returned, which led to Alex Freeland being sent down to the minor leagues.

His versatility also made him valuable to the Dodgers, and he has spent time at second base, shortstop, and left field while filling several different roles around the diamond. However, his offensive production declined sharply in recent weeks. Over his last 15 games, Kim hit .186 with eight hits, three RBIs, four walks, and 16 strikeouts.

This season, the 27-year-old has batted .248 with a .314 on-base percentage, two home runs, 19 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases in 61 games entering Friday. He has also appeared at three different defensive positions while providing depth throughout the roster.

The timing of the move surprised some observers because the Dodgers are still dealing with injuries. Hernández recently suffered another setback, while Teoscar Hernández has also battled health issues this season. It looked like Kim was going to get a good runway to rediscover his form, but even with those absences, Los Angeles has chosen to prioritize Kim's development rather than keep him in a limited role at the Major League level.

Meanwhile, Espinal’s return is expected to provide immediate depth, and the veteran brings experience across the infield and has appeared in more than 600 Major League games during his career. His versatility gives Roberts another option as the Dodgers manage a roster affected by injuries.

The Dodgers remain confident that a return to regular at-bats in Triple-A will help Hyeseong Kim reset and push for a return to the Major League roster later in the season.
