David Ortiz Hints At Reason Behind Red Sox, Rafael Devers Breakup

The Boston Red Sox have been in an odd situation all season to this point.

It has been a roller coaster of a season to this point, but things have been trending in the right direction, seemingly. Boston has won five straight games, including a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees this past weekend. Clearly, things weren't perfect behind the scenes, though.

Shortly after the Red Sox took down the Yankees on Sunday they also trade superstar slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

This deal came as a shock and the fallout was felt on Monday. Responses, reports, and opinions came in left and right. One person who weighed in on the trade is team legend and Hall of Famer David Ortiz. He joined Yancen Pujols for an interview and touched upon the subject of Devers' stunner. Marcos Grunfeld of El Emergente translated Ortiz's response.

"No one is indispensable on a team," Ortiz said translated by Grunfeld. "The only way to become indispensable is by doing things the right way, all the way around. You need to be available. I think that marked the end of the relationship between the Red Sox and Devers. You have to be smart. A player’s worst enemy is his ego. And guess what teams do with your ego? They buy it."

It's important to note that this is a translation. You can find the entire video here.

Ortiz continued, as transcribed by The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

"I played for the Red Sox a long time," Ortiz said. "You think everything with me and the Red Sox was roses and flowers? I went through some tough times also. But I was mature enough to understand and keep things internal. Even in the best families, between the best brothers, s—- happens. You need to have to the maturity to resolve the problems and move on...

"I know the communication between Devers and the Red Sox wasn’t the best at the very beginning,” Ortiz said. “But at some point you have to realize the organization has the power over everyone. They can play you, trade you, let you go. Sometimes as a young player, it’s hard to understand that. But they have the power to do whatever they want. The only thing you can control is what you do on the field...

"I think it would be easier, if they pay you that kind of money, to go, ‘(Explicit) it, let’s do it.’ But players’ egos play a big role sometimes. I’ve seen it with so many players. Sammy Sosa. A-Rod, my friend. Manny Ramirez, you name it. And guess what? At the end of the day . . . you know you did wrong. Once you mature, you understand."

It's one thing when a person with a keyboard talks about a move -- like myself for example. It's completely different when a legend like Ortiz speaks. What a stunner.
