Shohei Ohtani attended the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) awards dinner in New York over the weekend to accept his 2025 National League Most Valuable Player Award.
Ohtani delivered a speech in English, thanking the writers, his teammates, the Dodgers’ staff and front office, his agent and his family. He also congratulated the other award winners and gave a nod to the 1986 New York Mets, who were celebrating the 40th anniversary of their championship at the dinner.
Ohtani was named the NL MVP for the second consecutive season to begin his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has won the MVP Award four times, including twice with the Los Angeles Angels.
Ohtani wasn’t the only member of his family to win an award on Saturday night. His dog, Decoy (Dekopin in Japanese), also took home 2025 NL Most Valuable Dog honors.

Decoy, a Dutch Kooikerhondje, became popular among baseball fans when he was seen with Ohtani for the announcement of the 2023 American League MVP Award on MLB Network.
Ohtani and Decoy paired for a ceremonial first pitch during the 2024 season as part of a joint bobblehead giveaway, and the two-way star later honored his pet by including him on his customized cleats for MLB Players Weekend.
Ohtani became the most coveted free agent in MLB history after the 2023 season, which saw him meet with the Dodgers and several other teams.
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman believes the Dodgers sealed the deal by gifting Ohtani a box of team-themed dog chew toys for Decoy.
