The Detroit Tigers are currently the best team in baseball by three games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. After starting the season well, the Tigers have not looked back.
With the MLB trade deadline coming up quickly, there are many who believe that Detroit will look to be aggressive.
Looking at the roster, there are a couple of areas that the Tigers should look to upgrade. One of those areas is in the bullpen. Detroit could use another quality reliever and a left-hander would be at the top of the priority list.
Keeping that in mind, the Tigers have been mentioned as a possible trade partner for the Boston Red Sox.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic has named Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman as a potential target for Detroit.
Boston will have to make a tough decision on what direction it wants to head in at the deadline. Currently, the Red Sox hold a 48-45 record. They are still in contention for a playoff run, but there are reasons to believe that they should sell off some pieces as well.
During the 2025 MLB season thus far in Boston, Chapman has appeared in 39 games and has played at an elite level. He has compiled a 3-2 record to go along with a 1.25 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP, a 5.3 K/BB ratio, 15 saves, three holds, and just one blown save.
Throughout his career, Chapman has had stretches where he was one of the most feared relievers in baseball.
At 37 years old, Chapman is having one of those seasons now. If he is made available by the Red Sox, the Tigers should jump on the opportunity to pursue a trade for him.
