The Detroit Tigers have continued to address their bullpen at the trade deadline. Last night, they acquired Rafael Montero from the Atlanta Braves. This morning, they acquired Paul Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians. Now they’ve acquired right-handed pitcher Kyle Finnegan from the Washington Nationals. In 40 games this season, Finnegan is 1-4 with 20 saves, a 4.38 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 39 innings. The Nationals are getting right-handed pitchers Josh Randall and RJ Sales in return. The Oakland A’s drafted Finnegan in the sixth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He signed as a free agent with the Nationals on December 8, 2019, never appearing in a big league game with the A’s. Finnegan in 331 career big league games is 23-30. He has 108 saves, a 3.66 ERA, a 4.16 FIP, a 1.32 WHIP, and 320 strikeouts in 329.1 innings. He was an All-Star last season.
Randall, in 17 games at Single-A and High-A this season, is 5-5. He posted a 3.92 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and 70 strikeouts in 80.1 innings. In 19 career starts in the Tigers system, he is 5-5. Randall has a 3.95 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 84.1 innings.
Sales is in his first season in the Tigers system, having made 16 appearances with 15 of those coming as starts. He is 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 63 strikeouts in 66.1 innings.
