The Detroit Tigers are 19-23 after last night’s loss. They trail the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central by three games. They’re 1.5 games back of the Chicago White Sox for the final wild card spot in the American League.

Detroit dropped the first game of their series against the Mets last night, 10-2. Jack Flaherty struggled again, lasting only 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out two. Burch Smith, Enmanuel De Jesus, and Ricky Vanasco struggled as well, combining to allow seven runs, four earned on seven hits. They walked three and struck out three. Dillon Dingler hit a solo home run, and Spencer Torkelson drove in another run in the loss.
Kevin McGonigle continues to impress. He went 2-3 with a double and a walk last night in the loss. The Tigers’ top prospect continues to be a bright spot this season despite the rest of the struggles.
The Tigers may be getting some pitching reinforcements back real soon, as they sent right-handed pitchers Connor Seabold and Beau Brieske on rehab assignments to Triple-A Toledo. Gage Workman has played in two games with the Tigers, and he has a hit in each of those games.
The Tigers in the middle game tonight get Framber Valdez back from suspension. He’s 2-2 with a 4.57 ERA and 35 strikeouts. Christian Scott will face Valdez, who’s posting a 3.27 ERA with 15 strikeouts and is still looking for his first decision. First pitch is at 7:10 PM EST tonight.
