Just when the Detroit Tigers felt a surge of momentum, a crucial piece of their late-game puzzle was abruptly pulled off the board. In a gut-punch moment for the team and its fans, Kyle Finnegan suffered a right groin injury while warming up for what would have been his 13th appearance in a Tigers uniform.

The scene unfolded in the bullpen during the finale of a three-game series against the New York Mets at Comerica Park on Wednesday. As Finnegan prepared to enter the game, he felt a sudden tightness in his right groin. The call was made. He was shut down, a pivotal arm suddenly unavailable, sending a ripple of concern through the dugout.

Following the Detroit Tigers’ 6-2 victory, the man who has been nothing short of lights-out since his arrival was whisked away for medical testing, leaving reporters without a chance to get his side of the story. The severity of the injury remains a troubling question mark, hanging over a team that has come to rely on his dominance.

What This Means for the Tigers’ Bullpen

Manager A.J. Hinch, ever the steady hand, addressed the situation with his typical candor, though the update was sparse. “No, just that he wasn’t available,” Hinch said when pressed for details on Finnegan’s condition. The sudden change forced a quick scramble. “The only hiccup was Finnegan warming up and having that tightness, so we quickly had to audible,” he explained.

That audible meant calling on Tommy Kahnle for a second inning of work, a task he handled with the poise of a seasoned vet, delivering 1.1 scoreless frames. It was a testament to the “all hands on deck” mentality Hinch has instilled in his bullpen.

The loss of Finnegan, even for a short time, cannot be overstated. Since being acquired from the Washington Nationals at the July 31 trade deadline, he has been a revelation for the Detroit Tigers. In 12 games, he has tossed 14⅓ scoreless innings, striking out 19 batters while walking only three and nailing down four saves. He hasn’t just been good; he’s been perfect.

A Heavy Workload and a Timely Injury

The injury comes at a time when Finnegan’s workload has been at a career high. His 14.1 innings in August were the most he’s ever pitched in a single month. Furthermore, the Detroit Tigers have leaned on him for extended outings more frequently than the Nationals ever did. He’s already recorded more than three outs in four of his 12 games with Detroit, matching his total from 40 games in Washington.

Was this a case of a workhorse finally feeling the strain? It’s impossible to say for certain, but the timing is undeniably concerning.

Who Steps Up For the Detroit Tigers?

While the Detroit Tigers hold their breath for good news on Finnegan, the bullpen has shown signs it can weather the storm. The reemergence of Tommy Kahnle, who has now thrown six straight scoreless innings, is a massive boost. Rafael Montero, another trade deadline acquisition, has also been a pleasant surprise, posting a 2.77 ERA over his last 10 appearances. Alongside the reliable Will Vest, these arms form a core that will be tasked with bridging the gap to victory.

Kerry Carpenter, who blasted a decisive three-run homer in the game, praised the bullpen’s readiness. “It just shows how prepared everybody is down there,” he said. “When people are called upon to do jobs that they’re not necessarily used to doing, we’re prepared… It was really special.”

That “next man up” mentality will be tested now more than ever. The Detroit Tigers need Finnegan healthy for the stretch run, but for now, the weight of the late innings falls on the shoulders of his bullpen brothers. As the team looks to build on its recent success, the health of its closer has become the most pressing story in Motown.
