Detroit Tigers Starting Pitcher Tarik Skubal is putting together a stretch for the ages. He struck out his 100th batter of the year in last night’s start against the Chicago Cubs. With only 7 walks issued when reaching that milestone, that is the second-fewest free passes in league history at the time of a 100th strikeout. He also has had 95 strikeouts and 3 walks in his last 11 starts Skubal is the first pitcher to record 90+ strikeouts and 3 walks or fewer in an 11-start span in at least the last 125 seasons.

Skubal’s dominance has also extended a whopping 60 starts. He has a 2.39 ERA, 439 strikeouts, and 58 walks over that stretch. Only Jacob deGrom and Clayton Kershaw have matched those numbers over a 60-start span in MLB history. Skubal has also allowed a total of 76 earned runs in his last 50 starts. Coming off his first Cy Young Award in 2024, he has not slowed down this season. He is 10th in the league in ERA, 2nd in strikeouts, and 2nd in WHIP. Will the ace continue pitching at such a high level?

Tarik Skubal Career Summary

The star pitcher made his debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020. It took him a few seasons to find his footing in the league, but he started showing signs of the pitcher he is today in 2023. That season, Skubal did not have enough starts to qualify for league leaders. If he did, he would have finished fourth in the league in ERA.

Skubal had a tremendous season in 2024. He led the league in many pitching categories. He won the AL Cy Young Award, “Pitching Triple Crown,” and finished seventh in AL MVP voting. He received all 30 first-place votes.

Final Thoughts

Skubal’s next scheduled start is June 12 on the road against the Baltimore Orioles. He last faced the Orioles on April 27 and had a masterful outing. He tossed six scoreless innings and punched out 11. The reigning Cy Young Award will look to continue making history this season.
