TORONTO – An early Thursday afternoon matchup will include the Arizona Diamondbacks trying to avoid the sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Arizona couldn’t get anything going last night, as they were defeated by a score of 8-1. It’s been a roller coaster of a season for the Diamondbacks, as the consistency with execution just isn’t there. If the Snakes can bounce back quickly, they might be able to salvage at least one win in Toronto.
Ryne Nelson will be rolling today for the D-Backs. Nelson has been stellar as of late, with the exception of his start in Cincinnati. In his last outing against the San Diego Padres, Nelson pitched five innings and only allowed one run on five hits. With a lot of injuries happening to this D-Backs pitching staff, Nelson is making the most of his opportunities and looks to have another strong showing that Arizona can look to rely on moving forward.
Toronto will be having Kevin Gausman on the mound on Thursday. Gausman has been decent at home this season, with a 3-1 record and a 3.31 ERA at the Rogers Centre this season. He didn’t fare so well last time out though, giving up four earned runs on four hits in five innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Arizona will need to get some sort of offense going if they want to avoid getting swept. Although they will be doing so without star Corbin Carroll as he now deals with a left hand injury after being hit by a pitch yesterday night. Alek Thomas will now take over duties in center field this afternoon. The D-Backs are currently also fighting to prove that they want to contend in the second half of the season for a postseason spot, and don’t want to be sellers at the trade deadline. The Diamondbacks will have to focus on getting back to their brand of baseball to do so. First pitch on Thursday afternoon is at 12:07 p.m. PT.
