Diamondbacks Announce Major Roster Decision After Corbin Burnes News

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Tommy Henry took the mound in relief for his lone outing of the season on May 5, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in a 5-4 loss to the New York Mets.

Shortly after, he was back with the Triple-A Reno Aces, awaiting another call to the majors.

On Tuesday, however, veteran right-hander Corbin Burnes was inserted on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.

Burnes exited his Sunday start after surrendering one run on four hits over 4.2 innings against the Washington Nationals, visibly hampered by tightness and a drop in velocity.

The Diamondbacks quickly summoned Henry from Reno to fill the vacant roster spot and provide bullpen depth.

This isn't the first time that Henry has been recalled, having shuttled between Reno and the majors numerous times over his six-year MLB career.

A 27-year-old lefty out of Michigan, Henry was selected 74th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft by Arizona after leading the Wolverines to the College World Series finals.

He made his MLB debut on August 3, 2022, and earned his first big-league win less than a week later, hurling seven innings of one-run ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Over parts of the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, Henry made 26 appearances (23 starts), posting a combined 7-7 record with a 4.15 ERA and 64 strikeouts across 89 innings in 2023.

His upside as a long reliever and spot starter is well known to Arizona’s front office; in triple-A last year, he carried a 4.25 ERA over 108 innings, with 114 strikeouts and a 10-1 record.
