Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen exited Saturday’s game against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City with a right shoulder contusion. (h/t @Dbacks on X.com).
Gallen was struck by a comebacker off the bat of Padres catcher Freddy Fermin, a 92 mph line drive that made contact with Gallen’s throwing shoulder during the third inning. After a lengthy conversation with trainers and manager Torey Lovullo on the mound, Gallen remained in the game to finish the frame. He retired the side without further damage, but Brandon Pfaadt was seen warming in the bullpen shortly after. Lovullo decided to pull Gallen at the end of the third.

The 30-year-old finished his outing having allowed just one hit with three strikeouts in three scoreless innings. Gallen had been dealing at Mexico City’s Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu before the comebacker brought his afternoon to a close.
Pfaadt entered in relief and delivered a scoreless fourth inning in his second relief appearance since making the move as a starting pitcher to a bullpen role. The Diamondbacks led 4-0 at the time of Gallen’s exit, with the offense generating a two-run double from Jose Fernandez and a two-run homer from Alek Thomas.
Arizona is expected to have an update on Gallen’s status once he undergoes further testing. If the injury is not a long-term concern, he could potentially make his next scheduled start next weekend on the road against the Chicago Cubs. Gallen entered Saturday 1-1 with a 3.51 ERA, surrendering 31 hits, 11 runs and seven walks.
Saturday’s exit only added to an already strained roster. The Diamondbacks entered the game without catcher Gabriel Moreno (oblique), first baseman Carlos Santana (adductor) and shortstop Jordan Lawlar (wrist), among others, including ace Corbin Burnes, who remains sidelined after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2025, with a midseason return as the target.
With Burnes’ timetable still months away, Gallen had emerged as Arizona's main rotation anchor. His status will be among the most closely watched injury updates in the NL West. Should Gallen miss time, the burden falls on a rotation of Ryne Nelson, Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Soroka with Merrill Kelly still working his way back from an early-season IL stint.
The Diamondbacks sit third in the NL West at 14-11, three games behind Saturday's opponent, making the health of Gallen, their top healthy starter, that much more critical heading into the stretch.
