PHOENIX — As news of former Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor being traded to the Seattle Mariners begins to die down, fans continue to raise questions.
Naylor was traded for two pitching prospects, left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia and right-handed pitcher Ashton Izzi, to give the D-Backs more depth in their bullpen. General manager Mike Hazen is continuing to listen to offers for players, making a surprising statement on key players.
According to The Extra Point’s Mark McClune, Hazen hasn’t ruled out the possibility of trading players with longer contracts, like Ketel Marte, Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo. MLB’s Steve Gilbert reported that Hazen still believes the Snakes can compete this season. This has Diamondbacks fans wondering where the organization plans to take the team.
“I find it a little bit weird because [Naylor] was someone who was good,” one D-Back fan said. “I get you’re trying to get pitching because that’s been a problem. It’s kind of messed up because [the Diamondbacks] aren’t even playing that badly. It’s like we don’t know what to expect.”
Hazen has also said it would take a major haul back from teams for Marte, Carroll or Perdomo to make the trades happen.
“[The teams] would basically have to empty their farms,” another D-Back fan said. “I don’t know, I don’t want any of them to leave, obviously. Naylor [is] gone, so why try to keep competing? Get ready for next year.”
One fan is in favor of the Naylor trade and hopes that the two pitchers the Snakes received in return can help an already depleted pitching staff. They believe the more trades done, the more successful the team will be for the next few seasons.
“[Garcia] is a leftie and we’ve needed some leftie pitching for a bit, so that was a good trade,” they said. “If someone can give [the Diamondbacks] a really good package in return for anyone, I’d say go for it.”
Garcia will join the team in Pittsburgh, recalled from the Reno Aces on Saturday. The left-handed pitcher has already made his major league debut, playing two games with the Mariners.
Izzi has yet to make his major league debut and will begin with the Hillsboro Hops.
