SAN DIEGO – The Diamondbacks stood strong on Monday night and defeated the San Diego Padres in the first game of their series by a score of 6-3.

Arizona was able to bounce back early after San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Eugenio Suárez was able to hit a double to score Josh Naylor in the top of the second inning. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed it up with a single to left to score Corbin Carroll to give Arizona a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning.

Zac Gallen was settled in after giving up an early run, and was able to avoid catastrophe in the bottom of the fourth inning. San Diego loaded the bases up with two outs, though Gallen was able to get Trenton Brooks to pop out for the final out of the inning to leave runners stranded. Gallen was steady the rest of the day as he pitched six innings while not allowing any earned runs on five hits.

Arizona made some noise quickly after as Josh Naylor was able to give the D-Backs some insurance runs when he hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give Arizona a 4-1 lead.

The eighth inning included some drama after a Corbin Carroll triple and a Geraldo Perdomo single made it a 6-2 D-Backs lead.  Juan Morillo entered to pitch after Kyle Backhus allowed a run, and danced with danger but was able to strike out pinch hitter Elias Diaz to force San Diego to leave the bases loaded for the second time on Monday night.

Kevin Ginkel took over closing pitcher duties and was able to take care of the Padres’ stars after an incredible catch by Alek Thomas in center field along with a game-ending double play helped save the win. The D-Backs will look to keep their foot on the gas pedal against the San Diego Padres tomorrow night at Petco Park with the first pitch at 6:40 p.m. PT.
