Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo will move from batting third to the lead off spot against Rangers right-hander Jack Leiter. Outfielder Corbin Carroll slides down to bat third. It's unclear if this is a permant change or a strategic adjustment for this series.
Both players have been in strong form lately, but their skill sets offer different advantages in the lineup. Perdomo has been on a tear at the top of the order, slashing an impressive .435/.536/.652 over the last seven days. He has one home run, three RBIs, eight runs scored, and a 5:3 BB:K during that stretch.
Carroll, meanwhile, has shown signficant power this month, launching four home runs in his last five games. Over the past week, he's posted a .269/.321/.769 slash line, with seven RBIs, seven runs scored a 2:9 BB:K ratio. The Diamondbacks are clearly looking to maximize Carroll's power potential by placing him in the heart of the order.
Manager Torey Lovullo's decision reflects a desire to balance the lineup with a strong on-base percentage leading off and a power bat driving runs in the middle.
Arizona enters Tuesday hoping these adjustments will generate more consistent offense as they navigate a competitive National League Wild Card race. How long this lineup configuration lasts may depend on how well both Perdomo and Carroll perform in their new spots.
