Diamondbacks Place Starting Pitcher on IL with Elbow Injury

The Arizona Diamondbacks' starting rotation is taking another huge hit.

The Diamondbacks are placing starting pitcher Ryne Nelson on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 16) with a strained flexor tendon in his elbow. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks are calling up Yilber Díaz from Triple-A Reno to take Nelson's place on the active roster.

Nelson last pitched on Monday against the Los Angeles Angels and was effective. The right-hander allowed two runs over seven innings of work, with no walks and five strikeouts, while scattering nine hits in what ended up being a no-decision for the 28-year-old.

While Nelson's flexor tendon isn't torn, his timetable, however, could still be lengthy in what is a huge blow for the D-Backs' starting staff.

Arizona is already without ace Corbin Burnes, who recently suffered a setback in rehab from Tommy John surgery, which is expected to keep him out until at least September. Cristian Mena also recently underwent shoulder surgery. The Diamondbacks' No. 11-ranked prospect has yet to pitch this season.

With Nelson now on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the Diamondbacks could turn to Brandon Pfaadt to take Nelson's spot in the rotation. Pfaadt was bumped to the bullpen early this season and at one point optioned to Triple-A due to struggles.

In 15 starts this season, Nelson is 3-5 with a 4.97 ERA, 62 strikeouts and a 1.24 WHIP in 83.1 innings pitched.

The D-Backs begin Friday in third place in the NL West at 38-36 and welcome the Minnesota Twins this weekend for a three-game series. They're also just a half-game out of the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League.
