Diamondbacks recall Scott McGough from Reno, option Humberto Castellanos
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Diamondbacks made another move with their bullpen. They’ve recalled right-hander Scott McGough from Triple-A Reno while optioning fellow right-hander Humberto Castellanos.

McGough, 34, opened the season in the Diamondbacks bullpen but struggled to a 6.75 ERA in 15 appearances. He was optioned to Triple-A on May 7 as the corresponding roster move to when the team activated closer Paul Sewald from the 15-day injured list. Since being optioned to Reno, he has a 2.92 ERA in 10 appearances although he’s allowed six unearned runs in 12 1/3 innings.

Castellanos, 26, made his first appearance with Arizona since tearing the ulnar collateral ligament a start in 2022. After undergoing Tommy John surgery, he finally returned to a mound this season. He pitched 2 1/3 innings in long relief in the Diamondbacks’ 10-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, allowing five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With him throwing 60 pitches in his outing, the Diamondbacks will need to find an option to start on Sunday.

The team has two options to consider. The first is calling up a starter, with left-hander Tommy Henry slated to start Sunday for Reno. The other would be to call up Cristian Mena, who is scheduled to start Saturday, and have him pitch on six days’ rest. Should they opt for a bullpen game, they will still need someone to eat innings with Logan Allen unlikely to be available to eat up innings. Even in that scenario, calling up Henry to pitch out of the bullpen makes sense.
