Diamondbacks Reveal Gabriel Moreno Extension Update

The Arizona Diamondbacks have made it clear that Gabriel Moreno remains a central part of the franchise's long-term plans.

Chief executive officer Derrick Hall confirmed the club is actively pursuing a contract extension with the Gold Glove catcher, calling Moreno a "mainstay" as Arizona looks to secure one of its core players before he reaches future arbitration milestones. The update comes with the Diamondbacks firmly in the National League postseason race.

Moreno has rewarded that confidence with one of the best offensive stretches of his career. He entered Thursday batting .302 with seven home runs, 34 RBIs and a .391 on-base percentage while posting a .365 average and .920 OPS during July.

The 26-year-old has also overcome multiple injury setbacks this season. Moreno missed time with a left oblique strain in April after an earlier spring training elbow scare, but he has returned to anchor both Arizona's lineup and pitching staff behind the plate.

His durability has been tested in recent years, including a fractured right index finger that limited him to 83 games in 2025. Despite those interruptions, the Diamondbacks continue to view him as one of the organization's foundational players.

Arizona entered Thursday with a 53-49 record, holding second place in the National League West while remaining in the Wild Card race. Locking up Moreno would provide long-term stability at catcher as the franchise continues building around its young core.

The extension discussions also come as Moreno's value continues to rise. Along with his offensive production, his defensive reputation and 2023 Gold Glove résumé have made him one of the league's premier all-around catchers, strengthening Arizona's desire to keep him in the organization for years to come.
