At 17-18, the Arizona Diamondbacks are five games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. While still early in the season, the Diamondbacks will need to find their consistency to make a real playoff push.
One thing Arizona hasn’t struggled with though is triples. Their league-leading 11 are three more than any other franchise in MLB. While it may not be a reliable form of run production, the Diamondbacks will have something brewing anytime a triple is hit.
Leading the way is Corbin Carroll with four, which is no surprise. He has led the league in triples the past two seasons. Right behind him is Geraldo Perdomo with three. Coming off of his first All-Star campaign, it isn’t shocking to see the infielder continue his hot streak.
But behind them with two is Ildemaro Vargas. His mark means the Diamondbacks hold the top three spots in the triple race. If Arizona holds that mark, perhaps an offensive explosion will follow.
Vargas’ season has been eye-opening beyond the doubles. His play has given the Diamondbacks a crucial spark as they continue their NL West fight.
When it comes to triples, Vargas has nine total over his 10-year MLB career. The 2023 season was the only time he has had more than one in a year. Now, he has hit that mark over just 28 games.
During that stretch, Vargas has hit an MLB-leading .364 with six home runs and 22 RBIs. He has already tied his career-high in home runs and is only 10 RBIs from breaking his career-mark in that regard. At 34-years-old, Vargas is already having one of the best seasons of his career.
His work on the plate speaks for itself, but he has also managed to maintain his spot in the lineup due to his versatility. Vargas has already played every infield position as well as left field in 2026. Manager Torey Lovullo can be flexible when finding his spot in the lineup and field.
But even if Vargas was just a designated hitter, the Diamondbacks can’t take the bat out of his hands as he continues his hot streak. While batting nearly .400 may be unsustainable, Arizona wants to see him producing at a high level for as long as he can.
The Diamondbacks will have a difficult path to the playoffs, even with their ability to hit triples better than anybody else. But if Vargas’ breakout lasts the full season, Arizona will be a much more serious contender.
