The Los Angeles Dodgers have struggled to find an adequate replacement for center fielder Andy Pages. The 25-year-old All-Star suffered a fractured left hand on August 21 after getting drilled by a 100 mph sinking fastball. Pages underwent surgery shortly after landing on the 10-day injured list.
Before going down, he had been the most consistent player in Los Angeles’ lineup aside from first baseman Freddie Freeman. Across 128 games, Pages had posted a .272 batting average, .338 on-base percentage, .797 OPS, 21 home runs and 80 RBIs while playing elite defense in center field.
Los Angeles originally went with Alek Thomas as his replacement given his defensive abilities. However, Thomas struggled at the plate, leading to his demotion and the Dodgers subsequently turning to Tommy Edman in center field.
Pages made it clear when he went down that he intended to return in September ahead of the Dodgers’ playoff push. He addressed his injury when speaking with Dodgers sideline reporter David Vassegh ahead of Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pages revealed that he is pain free in his left hand and that he will begin swinging the bat over the next couple of days, marking the start of his swing progression and rehab process.
Pages will likely need a couple more weeks before he is fully ready to return to game action, but this is undoubtedly a significant step in the right direction, especially given that he is already pain free.

If he does not suffer any setbacks, he should be on track to begin a rehab assignment by mid-September, putting him on course to return as expected before the MLB playoffs begin.
The Dodgers have struggled to score runs without Pages in the lineup and need him back badly before October.
