Dodgers Announce Mookie Betts Update After Removal From Lineup

The Los Angeles Dodgers are starting to finally get some production from shortstop Mookie Betts. Now in his seventh season in Los Angeles, the 33-year-old veteran has not lived up to his usual standards.

Betts is a former MVP, eight-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger and six-time Gold Glove winner.

However, he is starting to show signs of life as of late. He has homered in two straight games, and over his last 13 games he has posted a .304 batting average, .347 on-base percentage, .847 OPS, two home runs and five RBIs while striking out just four times in 49 plate appearances.

Betts will not get a chance to continue his hot streak for Thursday's series opener against the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers.

The Dodgers announced their lineup card and Betts was not in it, with backup infielder Miguel Rojas slotting in at shortstop in his place.

Manager Dave Roberts spoke with reporters and revealed the reasoning behind the decision. He explained that Thursday had always been a scheduled day off for Betts and that despite his recent success he did not think about changing that.

He also added that the rest may have helped Betts settle in, as the Dodgers are in the midst of two long stretches of their schedule.

While the regular rest opportunities may have contributed to Betts getting more comfortable at the plate, it is still smart to give him a day off his feet. He will still be available off the bench for a pinch-hit opportunity if needed.

The Dodgers understand that a three-peat is their ultimate goal, and keeping Betts fresh and healthy will make reaching it that much easier down the stretch.
