When the Los Angeles Dodgers eventually end their five-game losing streak, we can already rule out Steward Berroa being the man responsible.
The Dodgers traded the 26-year-old Berroa to the Milwaukee Brewers shortly before the two teams clashed Wednesday afternoon. Milwaukee immediately placed Berroa on the minor league injured list with right shoulder bursitis.
Milwaukee subsequently designated right-handed pitcher Elvin Rodríguez for assignment.
Berroa went 7-for-37 in 45 at-bats with the Toronto Blue Jays last year, posting a .550 OPS and playing all three outfield positions. Toronto traded Berroa to the Dodgers in May, and he hit .330 in 199 plate appearances at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Originally signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2016, Berroa is a lifetime .254 hitter in eight minor league seasons. Berroa is a speedy one, though, owning 257 stolen bases in 320 tries.
If nothing else, Berroa provides outfield depth and a potential speed option when rosters expand in September. However, there's no reason to believe the Brewers will immediately turn to Berroa when he's healthy and ready to contribute.
Despite their recent skid, the 56-37 Dodgers still hold a five-game lead in the NL West. The Brewers, meanwhile, only trail the Chicago Cubs by 2 1/2 games in the NL Central.
Milwaukee entered Wednesday holding the NL's third and final Wild Card spot.
