Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Gives Update on Tyler Glasnow’s Return

Los Angeles Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow last threw a live pitch on April 27. Since then, and having thrown only 18 innings, Glasnow has been on the IL with right shoulder inflammation.

Working his way back to the roster, the 31-year-old righty has thrown his second rehab start on Friday to less-than-ideal results. Glasnow gave up five runs on seven hits and a walk, recording three strikeouts in just 2.1 innings for the Triple-A OKC Comets. This was a stark contrast from his first start, which lasted two innings and produced no runs.

For manager Dave Roberts, this isn’t nearly good enough. Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reported this on Roberts’ comments in a post on X:

“Dave Roberts said the report from OKC last night was that Tyler Glasnow’s stuff looked fine, but that he wasn’t efficient enough. They were hoping to get him into the fourth, but he only managed 2.1 IP. That means he’ll likely need at least two more rehab outings before returning.”

Glasnow pitched with little success when healthy this season, posting a 4.50 ERA. According to him, his bad numbers and his injury are a result of his new delivery, which he had developed intending to keep himself healthy. The one-time All-Star admitted that he hadn’t really nailed it, but he’s working on it. Roberts, on the other hand, is hoping Glasnow would focus less on his delivery and more on getting outs.

“He’s a very cerebral guy, mechanical, and as he’s gone through this rehab, he’s still thinking more internal, which is understandable," he said. "But as he starts to get out on rehab, get closer to competition, real-life game competition, my encouragement is to get more external. You’re going to start trying to get hitters out rather than [focus on] where your delivery is at.”
