Some have wondered if the Los Angeles Dodgers could move Mookie Betts back to the outfield. Tommy Edman could play shortstop, allowing Hyeseong Kim to play second full time.
The Dodgers have a tough decision to make, but according to a report from Sonja Chen of MLB.com, manager Dave Roberts said that Betts will play shortstop, and he doesn't see any change being made similar to what they did a year ago.
"I don't see us making a change even as we did last year. I don't see that happening," Roberts said. "He's a Major League shortstop on a championship club.”
Chen later added her thoughts, stating that if there's a situation where Betts could return to right field for a short period of time and it'd be best for the team, nothing should be counted out.
“That said, if there's a situation where a temporary shift to right field for Betts would objectively be the best move for the team from a lineup construction standpoint, maybe there's an off chance it happens. But I don't see that as being likely,” she wrote.
This is a good problem to have for the Dodgers.
Ultimately, they need to play the best nine players every game. If Kim would allow them to do that by playing second base, Edman playing short, and Betts in right, it's what should happen.
However, prior to the trade deadline, the Dodgers don't have to get too creative. If there's still a logjam after the deadline, depending on the other moves they make, that's when moving Betts back to the outfield might make even more sense.
