The Los Angeles Dodgers are coming off their second straight World Series title after taking down the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games. Their stars showed out on the biggest stage, as Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy and Yoshinobu Yamamoto all had big runs in the MLB postseason.
One piece of the Dodgers' team that didn't pan out well was the back end of manager Dave Roberts' bullpen. Before last season, Los Angeles signed former San Diego Padres closer Tanner Scott to a four-year, $72 million contract to bolster the bullpen.
However, Scott didn't have his best season in 2025, appearing in 61 games with a 4.74 ERA, and he did not appear in the playoffs due to a lower-body injury.
With Scott out of the equation during the Dodgers' postseason run, Roberts turned to Roki Sasaki, who was previously a starter, to be the team's closer.
With Sasaki predicted to go back into the starting rotation in 2026 and Scott being a question mark, Los Angeles will likely be looking a for closer to make a big splash in free agency.
ESPN's Jeff Passan gave his ideal pitch for many teams across the league on Tuesday, saying that the Dodgers signing New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz would be a perfect fit.
"While they have plenty of room to maneuver for a trade, the most obvious move is to hope the second time's the charm in spending big money on a closer after Tanner Scott's disappearing act this year," Passan said. "Sign free agent closer Edwin Diaz."
Diaz made his third All-Star appearance in 2025, pitching to a 1.63 ERA in 62 appearances with the Mets. He saved 28 games for New York and is now a free agent after opting out of his deal for next season.
With the Dodgers looking to become the third franchise ever to win three straight World Series titles, landing Diaz in free agency would be a huge step in the right direction.
