Dodgers’ Former All-Star Catcher Leaning Towards Retirement

After a 13-year Major League career, two-time All-Star Yasmani Grandal has indicated he will retire from baseball. His decision to hang up his catching glove comes after leaving the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate. The news of his decision comes from Worcester manager Chad Tracy, who had this to say in an interview with MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day on Tuesday:

“At the moment, it looks like he’s probably going to walk away and potentially hang [his cleats] up. We talked (Monday), and I knew he was gonna pack up and go...his response was ‘it’s time to be dad.’”

Grandal spent four years with the Los Angeles Dodgers and was a part of two World Series runs in 2017 and 2018, both of which the Dodgers lost. In 2015, Grandal was selected for his first All-Star game. The next year, he would miss out on the summer classic but would instead receive MVP votes.

In the 2018-2019 offseason, Grandal left for the Brewers in free agency as the Dodgers brought up Will Smith. In his one year with Milwaukee, Grandal had his career year, hitting .246/.380/.468 with 28 home runs, again earning MVP votes as well as marking his second and last All-Star selection.

Grandal spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, slumping midway through the year before eventually turning things around. After posting a .228 batting average with nine home runs on the season, Grandal would again wade into free agency.

Over the offseason, he rejected an offer to play for the Braves, instead signing with the Red Sox. Grandal has yet to see Major League action this year. If indeed he has seen his last plate appearance, Grandal will end his career as a lifetime .236/.345/.424 hitter with 194 home runs.
