The Los Angeles Dodgers head into a second straight offseason as World Series champions. Moreover, a potential lockout is looming, and changes may be coming to the league as part of a new collective bargaining agreement.
As a result, could Los Angeles be pushing all their chips to the table and load up on a roster using the rules from this CBA one last time? Deferring payments on contracts is how the Dodgers signed Shohei Ohtani and other players, so could the front office take advantage of the loopholes they have exploited one last time?
Between the MLB free agent and Japanese market, the Dodgers could be swinging for the fences. Furthermore, they could have a roster that’s in their prime and can withstand any changes that a new CBA might bring.
Los Angeles is always active in the offseason. Last season, the Dodgers landed Roki Sasaki from Japan along with relievers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates. However, they didn’t land a big fish in free agency like a Juan Soto.
Nonetheless, FOX Sports MLB insider Ken Rosenthal believes that the reigning champions will be going big-name fishing this winter.
“I had a rival executive tell me that he thinks the Dodgers are going to be even more active than usual this offseason because of the threat of either a salary cap in the next CBA or increased restrictions on spending,” Rosenthal said on the Thursday edition of “Foul Territory.” “So, this might be the last-chance saloon for the Dodgers to go nuts once more.”
Should the Dodgers go after a big-name this offseason, all eyes will be on Kyle Tucker, who played last season with the Chicago Cubs. Los Angeles does need help in the outfield, as the Michael Conforto signing didn’t have a significant impact that the team might have hoped for.
Moreover, Teoscar Hernández’s defense continues to decline, and will his offense be enough to keep him in the lineup? As a result, if Andrew Friedman and the front office really want to go wild, the Dodgers could have a new look outfield, along with a revamped bullpen.

“[The Dodgers] definitely would like to address their outfield, and you’ve seen them linked already to Kyle Tucker,” Rosenthal added. “Trent Grisham is another player that they’ve liked in the past, according to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya. It’s going to be interesting because Teoscar Hernandez did not have the same year this year that he did last year, and his defense has declined.
“That is one area I would expect them to address—the bullpen—in some fashion again. Maybe they go out and get another closer to top off Tanner Scott. The Dodgers are definitely a team to watch, and maybe the team that ultimately lands Tucker, we’ll see.”
It will be interesting to see what the Dodgers decide to do this offseason. Nonetheless, whatever they do, any signing will be seen as problematic, so why not choose to go all out this winter?
