The Los Angeles Dodgers never fully leave the chat. Even when the odds lean elsewhere, LA’s got a habit of hovering until the final moment. While one insider believes Kyle Tucker is not going to the Dodgers, his free agency is following that exact script.
Because, for all that’s worth, Outfield help has been a priority all winter, and Tucker checks every box. Power. Speed. Left-handed balance. The only real question now isn’t fit, but years. And that’s where things get interesting as spring training inches closer.
On January 12, Dodgers insider Doug McKain reported that Los Angeles remains involved in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, though a deal hinges on contract structure. According to McKain and multiple insiders, the Dodgers will only move forward if Tucker accepts a short-term, high annual average value (AAV) deal rather than the 10-year, $400M-range contract he initially sought. 1. The outfield is a weakness that the Dodgers have focused on improving all offseason.
2. Kyle Tucker is the best possible outfielder available in free agency or via trade.
3. They are still in it with him this late in FA.
4. Blue Jays are the… https://t.co/QRFNdih3IR
The Blue Jays are still viewed as favorites, with Toronto being more open to longer commitments, while the Mets also prefer shorter ones. The Athletic’s Katie Woo has said a shorter deal is the only way Tucker lands in LA, a sentiment echoed by MLB Network’s Steve Phillips. Still, conflicting voices exist, with analyst Rob Parker insisting Tucker won’t be a Dodger.
The New York Yankees’ Tucker hopes just took a hit as rival teams surged ahead in the race. NY recently pivoted toward Tucker after Cody Bellinger’s asking price reportedly jumped into the $36-37 million-per-year range. Tucker, viewed as the top outfielder available, suddenly made more sense. However, interest doesn’t equal leverage, and the Yanks may already be behind.
On January 12, former MLB general manager Jim Duquette reported that the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Mets are the three teams most closely linked to Tucker. All three have met with him, either in person or via video call, indicating active offers.
Duquette even floated the possibility that one of them could “increase” their bid. With Alex Bregman’s five-year, $175M Cubs deal potentially resetting the market, Kyle Tucker’s price may be rising, and the Yankees risk being priced out again.
