Dodgers Linked to Reunion With Former Ace, Ex-Yankees Starter

If somebody were to ask New York Yankees fans their opinions about Andrew Heaney, their opinions would be much different than those of the Los Angeles Dodgers fan base.

Heaney has played for the Dodgers and Yankees in the past, appearing for Los Angeles during the 2022 campaign.

The left-hander was excellent during his time with the organization, posting a 3.10 ERA and striking out 110 hitters in 72.2 innings.

Heaney has continued to throw the baseball at a decent level since then, and could be available at the deadline.

Playing for a below-average Pittsburgh Pirates team, the expectation is for him to be dealt. When searching for a landing spot for the left-hander, The Athletic considered a reunion with the Dodgers a possibility.

“After so much inconsistency early in his career, Heaney has settled into a niche these past three seasons as a reliable No. 4 starter with an ERA just over four. This is a guy who started three postseason games for the champion Rangers in 2023, and he looked like a free-agent steal for Pittsburgh until a couple of rough outings in late June ballooned his ERA. On the other hand, the strikeout rate has dipped quite a bit to below league-average, and the walk rate is up. He could make a playoff start for you, but you probably wouldn’t feel super comfortable about it,” they wrote.

It's almost certain that the Dodgers will be interested in adding another arm.

Whether they want somebody like Heaney remains to be seen, as he's been decent throughout the year, but not great.

He owns a 4.41 ERA and has struck out 73 hitters in 96.0 innings. Given he could eat innings for the Dodgers, he might be better than adding an unproven arm with more upside at this point.
