Dodgers Make Decision on Trade After Shohei Ohtani News

The Los Angeles Dodgers have several players on the injured list, including some of their top starting pitchers. On Saturday, right-handed starter Tony Gonsolin was placed on the injured list where he joined Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and other important Dodgers pitchers.

While two-way star Shohei Ohtani is not included on this list, he is still working his way back to the mound after undergoing right elbow surgery in September 2023. With all of these pitching injuries piling up, Los Angeles profiles as a team in the market for a pitcher at the trade deadline.

However, that may not be the case.

Speaking with Jon Heyman of the New York Post , Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes revealed the team has presently decided against making a pitching trade, citing the looming return of pitchers like Ohtani as the reason why.

"With the information we have, and where the guys are now and progressing, the expectation is we will have all we need in-house," Gomes said.

On Ohtani, he added, "There's no reason to think he’s not coming back."

As Gomes made clear, the news of Ohtani's looming return to the mound, along with other internal reinforcements, is why the Dodgers have decided against pursuing a trade for pitching help.

These comments come amid significant strides for Ohtani as a pitcher. Recently throwing a 29-pitch live batting practice session, the three-time MVP is scheduled to throw another on Tuesday in San Diego (via Bill Plunkett of the OC Register).

While it has been nearly two years since he last pitched in an MLB game, Ohtani owns a 3.01 career ERA with 608 strikeouts in 481.2 innings pitched. With this type of talent nearing a return, it makes sense why the Dodgers view Ohtani as the type of pitching reinforcement that can supplant the need for a trade.
