Dodgers' Max Muncy Reveals Reason for Recent Hot Stretch After Personal Decision

On April 29, Dodgers’ veteran slugger Max Muncy was struggling to the tune of a meager .180/.295/.236 and hadn’t yet connected for his first home run. It would mark the longest home run drought of his career.

MLB analysts from all corners of the internet had already predicted the end of Muncy’s eight-year Dodgers tenure. At age 34, it seemed like the former postseason hero was reaching the quick end of a downward spiral. But the next day, something significant happened.

In a game against the Marlins, Muncy took the field sporting prescription eyewear to correct astigmatism in his right eye—the result: a 2-for-4 night and his first home run of the season. Since then, Muncy hasn’t looked back.

The once powerful slugger appears to have rediscovered his old form, raising his stat line to .226/.348/.425 and collecting nine home runs. When asked if the glasses were the reason behind his sudden surge, Muncy had this to say:

"I think I'm not selling out to them because it's not like I was really terrible for several years," Muncy said (h/t MLB). "It's just one of those things where maybe it is because of the glasses, but for me, I want to trust in the work that I've been doing and I want to trust in myself that I didn't just bring in something random and that's what's helping me."

Muncy, in a way that mildly sidesteps giving full credit to his new glasses, refocused the discussion on his hard work as a player. To his point, the glasses aren’t swinging the bat; he is.

The art of hitting combines the simple action of swinging a bat with the complex composite of mechanics, bat speed, discipline, timing, and launch angle; all things Muncy has recently excelled at.

However, none of that matters if you can’t see the ball. For Muncy, it seems as though his hard work, when aided by his new vision, is a recipe for continued success.
