The Los Angeles Dodgers have already made one of the biggest moves of the offseason. Adding star closer Edwin Diaz was a massive win for the defending World Series champions, and they may not be done spending.
Kyle Tucker is the biggest name in free agency right now, and with the Dodgers' need for help at the corner spots of the outfield, he's an obvious fit for Dave Roberts' team. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean they will want him there for the long run. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Dodgers will only offer him a short-term deal.
"The Dodgers will make a bid for Tucker, and are willing to pay in excess of $30 million a year, but only on a short-term contract," Nightengale wrote. "They have no interest in giving him the nine- or 10-year deal he’s seeking."
The Dodgers are looking to three-peat, and giving Diaz the highest AAV for a reliever in MLB history shows that they're not messing around. They've repeatedly stated that they don't intend to trade Teoscar Hernandez, and Tucker's defensive prowess could help hide some of his flaws in that regard.
Of course, the two-time Silver Slugger winner will get plenty of bids for his services, given his positional versatility and proven track record as a winner. But if no other team is willing to give him the long-term stability he's looking for with a lengthy deal, the Dodgers could be a legitimate player for his services.
