The Los Angeles Dodgers realistically do not have many needs as the MLB trade deadline draws near. LA’s roster features no shortage of both talent and depth. With that being said, the Dodgers’ starting rotation would benefit from another starter. Of course, the Dodgers are being linked to Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal. Another starter who could make sense for LA is Seattle Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo.
While the Mariners are competitive, Castillo has been mentioned as a trade candidate. The 33-year-old is not having the best season, as he currently holds a 4.79 ERA across 17 outings. He has pitched better in recent games, though, as Castillo has allowed two earned runs or less in four of his past five outings.
The Dodgers feature a talented farm system, but trading Castillo rather than Skubal would not cost as much when it comes to moving prospects as well. With the Dodgers not in desperate need of a starter, acquiring Castillo instead of Skubal could make sense.
So, what could a potential trade between the Dodgers and Mariners look like?
Dodgers receive: RHP Luis Castillo
Mariners receive: OF Alex Call, OF Charles Davalan, RHP Marlon Nieves
The Mariners are a contending team right now, so acquiring at least one MLB player will surely intrigue them. Call, a right-handed hitting outfielder, could give the Mariners a boost. He has not had the best season, but the outfielder is hitting .255 across 110 at-bats.
Randy Arozarena is the Mariners starting left fielder. Center fielder Victor Robles has struggled at the plate, though. Luke Raley has found success, but he is a left-handed hitter. Of course, Julio Rodriguez is a star, but he is injured at the moment.
Bringing in Call would help the Mariners’ outfield depth while giving them another right-handed bat.
According to MLB.com, Davalan is the Dodgers’ No. 7 overall prospect and Nieves is the team’s No. 18 overall prospect. Davalan, 22, features promising offensive ability and his MLB ETA is set for 2028. Nieves, meanwhile, is a 19-year-old right-handed pitcher who is expected to make his MLB debut in 2029. He throws a good fastball and slider, but Nieves is still working on the overall control of his pitches.
It is a respectable trade return for Castillo. If he was pitching at a higher level this season, the Dodgers would need to offer more. Given the overall situation, this specific trade package may catch the Mariners’ attention.
Seattle already has starting pitching depth. Moving Castillo would allow them to address their outfield this season while also giving them two prospects who could help the team down the road.
As for the Dodgers, bringing in Castillo would give them a reliable veteran. Pitchers such as Roki Sasaki and Emmet Sheehan have endured up and down seasons. Castillo could join the rotation and make an impact. Although Castillo has not pitched especially well this year, he has been consistent over the years. From 2023-2025, he recorded ERAs of 3.34, 3.64 and 3.54 while making at least 30 starts in each of those seasons.
While this specific trade may not occur (although anything is possible), it would not be surprising if the Dodgers end up being linked to Castillo. Skubal trade rumors will continue to swirl, but Castillo is a pitcher who the Dodgers will surely monitor as the MLB trade deadline draws near.
