Dodgers Re-sign Right-handed Reliever Evan Phillips

Phillips was non-tendered at the end of the 2025 season, but the Dodgers made it clear that they were interested in getting him back on a restructured deal closer to Spring Training. The right-hander is still recovering from elbow surgery from last May, so he will be sidelined until at least the middle of the 2026 season. Phillips has struggled to stay healthy since the latter part of 2024, when he was used sparingly. The Dodgers eventually left him off the postseason roster.

A Revelation

The right-hander is a product of the Tampa Bay Rays organization who has turned into a high-leverage reliever and a closer out of necessity. He had a  1.14 Earned Run Average in 2021, striking out 1/3 of the batters he faced in 63 innings. By 2023, he was inserted into the closer’s role and flourished there with a 2.05 ERA and 24 saves. The combination of a 95 mph fastball and a devastating sweeper made him almost unhittable. If he is healthy and effective when he comes back this year, it will be a bonus to the bullpen. The Dodgers, who struggled to find a reliable right-handed bullpen arm, have signed Edwin Diaz. Phillips could provide more depth and length if they make it to October.

 Odd Man Out

The D.F.A. train has been busy this winter. This is the second time that Rortvedt has been put on it. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Dodgers sign the backup catcher to a minor-league deal if he makes it through waivers.
