Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin Reveals Elbow Injury Update

It has been a frustrating season for Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin.

He started 2025 on the injured list with a back injury and struggled on the mound with a 5.00 ERA, a 5.97 FIP, and 38 strikeouts to 18 walks over seven starts and 36 innings. Gonsolin had also missed all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so an acclimation period was warranted.

However, Gonsolin felt right elbow discomfort after his start versus the New York Mets on June 4th, and the updates are not positive.

His UCL is still intact, but there is no timetable for his rehab. Here is what Gonsolin had to say about his latest setback:

“I know ultimately how I’m feeling is I’m letting the team down and those are innings that I should be eating up,” Gonsolin said. “It’s baseball, it happens, injuries happen. It just really sucks. I’m very frustrated.”

This difficult stretch continues for Gonsolin, a disappointing development after he showed so much promise as a youngster. From his 2019 rookie campaign through the 2022 season, he had a 2.51 ERA, a 3.45 FIP, 267 strikeouts to 91 walks over 272 and 2/3 innings, a fourth-place finish in the National League Rookie of the Year voting, and an All-Star nod in 2022.

Injuries have always been a concern as various shoulder, forearm, and, of course, that pesky elbow have hindered Gonsolin from fulfilling his potential. The Dodgers also have 14 pitchers on the injured list and suddenly find themselves strapped for innings.

Rookie Ben Casparius will receive starts with Gonsolin, Roki Sasaki, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow all out. He has shown nothing but promise since making his Big Leagues debut last year, and has an impressive season brewing.

Casparius has a 2.86 ERA, a 1.90 FIP, and 46 strikeouts to nine walks over 44 innings. Hopefully, for Los Angeles, he can ease the prolonged absence of Gonsolin.
