Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow Makes a Fundamental Change to Stay Healthy

As things stand today, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a grand total of 14 pitchers on the IL. An injured list this long for just the pitching staff alone is quite a surprise. What isn’t a surprise is the fact that Tyler Glasnow is on it.

Over his career spanning back to 2016, Glasnow has never pitched a full season. His 134 innings pitched and 22 starts last year were both career highs. This season, Glasnow pitched a total of 18 innings to the tune of a 4.50 ERA over five starts before falling on the IL with a shoulder problem.

During the winter, Glasnow experimented with a new delivery in hopes of staying healthy. But after this failed to keep him healthy or produce good results, Glasnow appears to be making new adjustments.

“My stride is really straight,” he said in an interview with Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic. “I never land closed, I was opening up, so I was just putting a lot of stress on my shoulder. My velo was down, stuff wasn’t good, command was really bad, and when it clicked, like anything, it was fine. But I just wasn’t on track and didn’t know how to fix it because it was just so new. But I was just late on everything. That’s every pitcher’s issue in their delivery, landing late or not being on time. I think it was more late than I’m generally used to. Like it would be a great long-term fix, but I just don’t think I was doing it correctly.”

Glasnow still believes in his new delivery, but he admits it needs some fine-tuning. The 31-year-old starter is reportedly close to facing hitters again. Dodgers’ fans will hope his perfected delivery will keep him healthy without compromising his effectiveness.
