Don Mattingly Delivers Luis Arraez News After Early Exit

Luis Arráez avoided a potentially serious injury scare Thursday night, but the Philadelphia Phillies will continue monitoring his ankle heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Arráez left Philadelphia’s 5-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth inning after hurting his left ankle while trying to avoid a tag at first base. He needed help leaving the field after the play.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly provided an encouraging initial update after the game, saying X-rays on Arráez’s ankle were negative.

The Phillies will monitor Arráez’s ankle and determine the next steps based on how he responds. A negative X-ray rules out an obvious fracture, but it does not establish how quickly he will be able to return to the lineup.

Arráez has been an important part of Philadelphia’s lineup since arriving from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline. He entered Friday batting .278 with two home runs, 10 doubles and 21 RBIs in 46 games with the Phillies.

His production in San Francisco also helped establish his strong overall 2026 numbers. Before the trade, Arráez hit .324 with 23 doubles, seven triples, four home runs and 43 RBIs in 105 games for the Giants.

The Phillies have not yet secured a postseason berth, but they still have three regular-season games remaining. That makes Arráez’s status worth watching as Philadelphia prepares for October.

For now, Mattingly’s update provides some relief after the veteran infielder’s painful exit. The Phillies will have to wait and see how Arráez’s ankle responds before determining when he can return to the field.
