National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci may have delivered the worst first pitch in MLB history ahead of the Opening Day showdown between the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees, but that hasn't hurt his popularity among some baseball collectors.
Last week, Topps revealed a baseball card commemorating Fauci's forgettable delivery that never actually reached home plate. The card not only sold out in one day. As noted by CNBC's Cory Stieg, the card featuring the 79-year-old American hero and international celebrity was going for as high as $9,995 on eBay as of Thursday.
Per CNBC, Topps sold 51,512 of the Fauci cards in 24 hours, which made it the highest-selling baseball card in the company's history.
Founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions Kenny Goldin estimates the Fauci card is actually "worth" $125 to $145." In reality, though, it's worth whatever anybody is willing to pay for it.
For a mere $10,000, you could hold a piece of baseball history.
