After just two seasons of full functionality, DraftKings Sportsbook announced it is ending its retail sportsbook operations at its Wrigley Field location. Per the Chicago Tribune (Subscription Required), the location will remain open as a sports bar. However, the in-person betting experience with physical tickets at the counter is no more.
In a statement, DraftKings said the discontinuation of its sportsbook operation is primarily due to additional taxes imposed by the state of Illinois on sports betting. As of 2024, the tax rate was as high as 40%.
Additionally, gamblers in Illinois continue to face a tax on each wager made that other states do not have to deal with. What started as anywhere from a $0.10 to $0.25 per-wager tax on platforms is now up to $0.50, including DraftKings. Currently, FanDuel Sportsbook is running a promotion through the end of the NBA Finals, dismissing the per-wager tax on all wagers for all users.
Per Bruce Levine of 104.3 The Score, the original deal between DraftKings Sportsbook and the Chicago Cubs was for ten years and worth $100 million. However, the Cubs had nothing to do with the gambling operation. The two sides agreed to share revenue from restaurant sales.
This should not change the day-to-day operations for the partnership between DraftKings and the Cubs. They will continue to share the restaurant revenue, and patrons will still be able to place wagers on their phones with the DraftKings Sportsbook app. The only difference is that there will no longer be a place to obtain a physical ticket at a counter.
